2023 Dry Riesling
Viticulture:
For the Second time, our Dry Riesling is not totally estate. KLV suffered more than 75% losses in the vineyard as a result of the infamous May 18, 2023 freeze, about 28F for many hours when the buds were well-advanced. For the 2023 vintage dry, we chose a blend of 58% Estate and 42% Ravines. The estate portion that went into this blend is made up of the Goldman Vineyard (43%) from the west side of Keuka Lake, and 20 Rows (26%) and the Lower Eastside Vineyards (31%) on the east side of the lake. Morten Hallgren of Ravines, knowing our predicament, was generous enough to sell us fruit. The Ravines portion came from their White Springs Vineyard.
Vinification:
Grapes were pressed and settled for 36-48 hours in stainless steel. The juice was then fermented, each vineyard separately, at approximately 60°F. The wine was aged in stainless steel for 9 months prior to blending, filtering and bottling.
Tasting Notes:
A floral bouquet of honeysuckle and peach blossom, lifted by a hint of vanilla. Flavors of white peach and kiwi are anchored by an elegant minerality that leads to a long, refreshing finish.
