2023 Evergreen Lek Riesling
On May 18, 2023, KLV along with most vineyards on Keuka and the lower half of Seneca Lake suffered the worst Spring Frost in memory. KLV lost overall more than 75% of its potential grapes. Some vineyards were totally or near totally devastated; a few were not severely affected. Evergreen Lek Vineyard’s losses were right at the average of about 75%. Yield was just under one ton.
This wine benefits greatly from breathing. As you let the wine open up, aromas of citrus and fruit blossoms evolve into an orange honey blossom. Notes of lemon zest on the palate along with a savory and saline character gives the wine a lovely textured finish.
Vineyard: Situated along the steep western slopes of Keuka Lake, the Evergreen Lek vineyard is one of our oldest Riesling sites. The vineyard was planted in 1999, pushing up against a strand of evergreen trees on its northern edge. The soil is highly eroded and consists of large amounts of slate and glacial deposits.
Vinification: The wine went through standard KLV practice. Grapes were hand-harvested, pressed and settled over a couple of days before inoculating. The wine fermented at below 60F for about 4 weeks, were racked and aged in stainless steel for 9 months
